2009 Season Review – We had another successful 2009 season. We had extremely high expectations based on the trail camera photos. 1000’s of photos mostly of elk and mostly of bulls filled our compact flash cards through the summer.
Archery Elk – Our season started off with numerous encounters and a lot of missed opportunities early during the 1st Session. On one particular call set up produced nine 6 point bulls, a released arrow and a disheartened hunter, everyone was into elk early and often, but the elk won most of the scrimmages. The 2nd Session produced many a frustrating days afield with fewer encounters and missing elk. The 3rd Session produced the screamers as usual with the rut kicked in hot & heavy, calling was difficult but when the stars aligned, big bulls paid the price.
Rifle Mule Deer – Muley hunts ran out at 100% success again in 2009. We didn’t capitalize on the bruisers but we were able to put a few nice bucks on the ground for the photo shoot. We had one particular 180” plus buck get through, a true monster not only for Oregon but any Western state.
Rifle Elk Hunts – 1st Session was a hoot, we had a returning group of hunters. We didn’t have our oldest hunter but our youngest elk hunter to date harvested a nice 5 point. The bulls where everywhere and so were the bullets all told we ended up on over 100% shot opportunity and 90% harvest rate. 2nd Session – Another standard year, bulls available, colder conditions, 70% success rate, a true western elk hunt. Cow Season – Wow you’d thought they had horns, another great season to fill the freezer.
The economy was the big story in 2009, with hunter numbers down from previous seasons; the seed crop of animals left behind should produce big dividends for our 2010 season.
